Western flower thrips is highly resistant to chemicals. Leads invisible lifestyle. Hides in bulbs, holes, clefts, pest lays eggs into leaf ground tissue. Such lifestyle makes it difficult to control the pest.
Western flower thrips is a dangerous pest for ornamentals and vegetables. Can damage more than 300 types of plants. Sucks plant sap that causes development arrest of crop. The result is epinasty (vegetables) or flower deformation (rose). Pest transmits viruses (e.g.tomato spotted wilt virus).
Size: 0,9-1,2 mm, color: yellow to dark-brown.
6 stages: egg, 2 larvae instars, protonymph, nymph and adult. Optimal temperature: 15-30°С. Cycle from egg to egg at 26-29°С lasts 12 days. Protonymph and nymph go to soil and stop feeding. Female lays 100-250 eggs during life period (27-45 days).
For preventive control use Hypoaspis miles (Stratiolaelaps scimitus) that kills thrips in substrate, Amblyseius cucumeris and Amblyseius swirskii that kill first instar, Macrolophus caliginosus that kills larvae instars and Orius laevigatus that kills almost all instars.
